In general, we often use non-fiction text and fiction novels to teach the skills and strategies that will enhance your child's reading. Much of what is read also supports our curriculum in Social Studies.
In reading class, students will not only learn what a "good" reader does but how to read different types of text. Stragtegies for for fictional, non-fiction and informative texts vary, and we hope that children learn to read all types of text. It is also important that students learn how respond to questions, make inferences, and summarize what they have read. All of these skills and more will be focused on in 6th grade.
Novels that may be used throughout our school year include but are not limited to the following novels;
Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
Mick Harte Was Here by Barbara Park
The Jacket
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Maniac Magee
Catherine Called Birdy
Walk Two Moons
The Pyramid
