DISTRICTS REPORTING STANDARDS FOR 6TH GRADE SCIENCE

1. Understands how models represent scientific principles and concepts. (Models)

2. Uses results from investigations or presented information to support scientific principles and concepts. (Reasoning)

3. Understands scientific vocabulary.

4. Understands the impact of scientific concepts (choices) on an individual and the world.

All assessments will be created to access one or more standards. A rubric has been designed with specific criteria that help students and teachers evaluate student performance and knowledge on each standard. (Advanced, Proficient, Basic, Minimal).

Science begins with the study of the human body. The information below includes the beginning units that we will be studying and may change in detail.

September:

Your child will 1st be learning about the characteristics that all living organisms share.

They will then learn about the organization of the human body. (Cells, Tissues, Organs, Systems).

Next is the systems of support and movement = Skeletal and Muscular Systems

The overall goal for each system is that your child know the following:

     1. The purposes / functions of each system.

     2. The organs that belong to each system.

     3. How the systems are dependent on one another.

     4. How choices affect the overall system and body.

Vocabulary for the unit on Systems, Support and Movement.

The understanding of the following vocab will greatly enhance your child's understanding of the unit on support and movement.

  • Organism     Cell     Tissue     Organ     System      Unicellular     Multicellular
  • Interdependence
  • Homeostasis
  • Marrow     White Blood Cells     Red Blood Cells     Platelets     Plasma
  • Joints      Tendons     Ligaments
  • Voluntary Muscle     Involuntary Muscle     (Smooth, Cardiac)
  • Fulcrum     Resistance     Effort      (Your body movements are like a lever)
  • Fractures -   Impacted           Compound           Simple

2nd Unit - Absorption, Digestion and Exchange -

Big Idea - Systems in the body obtain and process materials and remove waste. Everything you breath drink and eat eventually goes into your blood.

Respiratory System - You will learn about the structures of the respiratory system that function to exchange gases. You will learn about the process of cellular respiration. You will learn about other functions of the respiratory system. You will be writing a letter to someone you care about explaining why you feel it is important they quit smoking.

  • Vocabulary - Respiratory system      Cellular Respiration     Epiglottis     Trachea     Diaphragm
  • Bronchial Tubes     Aveoli     Respiration     Carbon dioxide     Oxygen   Glucose

Digestive System - You will learn about the role of digestion in providing energy and materials. You will learn about the chemical and mechanical process of digestion. You will learn how materials change as they move through the digestive system and you will learn the parts of the digestive system.

  • Vocabulary - Nutrients      Digestion     Peristalsis     Salivary glands     stomach     small intestine
  • Large intestine     Esophagus     Liver     Gallbladder     Pancreas     Diabetes     Protein     Fat
  • Carbohydrates

Urinary System - You will learn the important function of the Kidneys. You will learn how the kidneys play a role in homeostasis. You will learn the parts of the Urinary system.

  • Vocabulary - Kidneys     Bladder     Ureters     Urethra     Nephron   Artery     Vein

Unit 3 - Systems of Transport and Protection -

Big Idea - Systems function to transport materials and to defend and protect the body.

Unit 4 - Systems of Development and Reproduction
